A new film set in the universe of J.R.R. Tolkien, scheduled for release in December 2027, has already ignited discussions following criticism of its cast. After the announcement of the first actors, including Anya Taylor-Joy, Kate Winslet, Jamie Dornan, and returning ‘Lord of the Rings’ stars Elijah Wood and Sir Ian McKellen, online commentators expressed concerns that ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ might feature an all-white cast.
The lack of ethnic diversity among the announced actors has drawn criticism from some fans, as reported by BBC, which discussed the issue in an interview with the film’s director, Andy Serkis. Serkis emphasized that the selection of actors was made with care, citing Tolkien’s interest in Scandinavian mythology as one reason for the casting choices.
Director’s Position on Casting
“The Shire feels very, very, very strongly like a very, very white place…” said Serkis in an interview with BBC. He explained that the inhabitants of the Shire—the setting for the film—are largely uninterested in events beyond their borders and are hesitant to accept outsiders, a theme that will be partially reflected in the film.
Despite the backlash, Serkis stated he will not reconsider the casting, asserting: “I am not going to do politically correct casting just for the sake of it.”
Serkis’ Experience and Previous Discussions
Andy Serkis, who is also an actor and previously portrayed Gollum (and plans to do so again), recalled in an interview with BBC how his role in the film ‘Black Panther’ as one of the few white actors provided him with a deeper understanding of what it is like to be part of an ‘ethnic minority’ on set.
Films and series based on Tolkien’s works have previously sparked debates about representation. For instance, in 2022, Amazon’s series adaptation ‘The Rings of Power’ faced criticism for its more inclusive casting, as reported by Variety.
This criticism led actor Elijah Wood, who played Frodo, to post a photo on the platform X wearing a T-shirt featuring cartoon ears of various skin tones, accompanied by the caption “You are all welcome here.”
