According to Bloomberg, European and Russian representatives held a secret meeting during which they discussed issues related to Ukraine. The meeting was attended by former UK National Security Advisor Tim Barrow, former German State Secretary Markus Ederer, and French diplomat Pierre Vimont. According to the agency, an unnamed former Russian official was also present. During the negotiations, potential conditions for peace talks that could lead to the end of the war in Ukraine were discussed.
Organization of negotiations in Vienna
Bloomberg also reported that the meeting was organized by a Swiss analytical center. One of the agency’s sources specified that the organizer of the negotiations in Vienna was the Swiss Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue. This organization positions itself as “a pioneer of discreet, impartial, and independent mediation in conflicts”. Ederer and Vimont are members of its supervisory board.
Similar meetings in the past
The media also reported that similar meetings were held in previous years. For example, sources from “The Moscow Times” reported that former high-ranking US national security officials and representatives of the Kremlin participated in secret diplomatic negotiations in 2023.
