North Korea launched a ballistic missile toward the Sea of Japan, South Korea reports

North Korea launched at least one ballistic missile into the sea, according to South Korea’s military. The launch occurred on Thursday, and the missile fell into the Sea of Japan after Pyongyang criticized Tokyo for strengthening its military policy in the Pacific.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) of South Korea informed the media that “our military detected the launch of a short-range ballistic missile from the Wonsan area in North Korea around 17:00“. Earlier, the JCS reported that the missile was launched toward the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan.

The Japanese Ministry of Defense also posted on the platform X, stating that “something that could be a ballistic missile was launched from North Korea”. In a separate post published soon after, it was noted that “there is no further impact on the areas around Japan”.

North Korea has repeatedly declared its irreversible status as a nuclear state after the summit between leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump in 2019 failed due to disagreements over the scope of denuclearization and the easing of sanctions.

Seoul has intensified surveillance and is on high alert for possible additional launches, exchanging information with its security allies—the United States and Japan—according to the JCS.
