The president of the autonomous city of Ceuta Juan Jesus Vivas called on the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament to strengthen the city’s border with Morocco to prevent a repeat of last week’s events.
Vivas called for all necessary resources to be provided to address the current situation in the city, where a significant number of migrants seeking asylum, as well as many minors, remain.
Concern and a call to Europe
Today, Vivas spoke at a virtual meeting of the leaders of the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE). “Our population feels sadness, helplessness, unease, fear, and concern. And there are reasons for this, as the inevitable question arises whether this will happen again, which could lead to a final fall into the abyss,” Vivas stated during his speech before the Committee, according to the Efe agency.
The Committee meeting invited the Minister of the Interior Fernando Grande-Marlaska and the Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration Elma Saiz, but they were not present. Instead, the Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner participated.
