Iranian drone attacks on Amazon data centers six months ago have resulted in the permanent loss of some customer data stored in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.
According to a September 15 update on the AWS health dashboard, Amazon Web Services was «unable to recover access to resources and data» hosted in several data centers damaged by the strikes. The news was first reported by Reuters. The situation points to the catastrophic scale of the damage inflicted on the data centers by the Iranian strikes.
Extent of infrastructure damage
In the United Arab Emirates, customer data was permanently lost in one of the three AWS availability zones, mec1-az2. Each availability zone is supported by one or more Amazon data centers.
The company continues to work on «restoring regional resources» and those hosted in the other two availability zones in the UAE. The AWS update states that the company is replacing «damaged infrastructure» and promises to notify customers about service restoration in the coming months.
In the Bahrain region, the scale of the damage proved even greater: Amazon stated it was unable to recover access to resources and data in all three availability zones.
«Damage to our infrastructure spanned multiple availability zones and exceeded what our regional and multi-zone services are designed to withstand,» the AWS update said.
