According to independent experts from a United Nations mission, there are «reasonable grounds» to believe that the United States may have committed war crimes against civilians in Iran. A report to be presented to the UN Human Rights Council on Monday highlights a strike on a school that left more than 150 people dead.
The experts stated that following US and Israeli attacks on February 28, the mission concluded there are reasonable grounds to believe the United States may have committed a war crime by carrying out «indiscriminate attacks that resulted in the death or injury of civilians or damage to civilian objects». Neither Iran, Israel, nor the United States is a member of the UN Human Rights Council.
Human rights violations in Iran
Beyond the consequences of the war, independent experts stated that Iranians are facing «gross human rights violations» at the hands of their own government. Specifically, Tehran has intensified the use of «repressive laws» and «lethal force» to suppress protests sparked by the rising cost of living.
In their report, the independent experts called on the 47 member countries of the UN Human Rights Council to demand an end to the war, hold those responsible for war crimes accountable, and provide refuge to civilians fleeing the country.
