The American space agency NASA is seeking four volunteers for a year-long simulation of a mission to the Moon or Mars. According to NASA, the mission is scheduled to begin no earlier than August 2027. This simulation will, for the first time, combine interplanetary transit with work on the surface of the Moon or Mars.
The “Moon and Mars Exploration Analog” (MMEA) program at the Johnson Space Center in Houston aims to prepare for future long-duration space missions. Participants will live in isolated habitat modules under conditions similar to those in space, performing tasks such as growing plants for food, monitoring their own health, and practicing spacewalks. The goal of the experiment is to better understand the risks associated with long-duration space missions and to test measures that will help maintain the health and performance of astronauts.
Three stages of the experiment and adaptation to the Martian day
The experiment consists of three stages and involves the use of two habitat modules. Initially, the crew will live in a module that simulates a spacecraft during the flight from Earth to the Moon or Mars. Participants will then move to a complex that replicates the conditions of life on the planet’s surface, where they will grow food crops, undergo training on a specialized site, and take trips in a rover. Following this, a “return journey” will occur in the transit habitat module.
As reported by CNN, another focus of the research will be adaptation to the Martian day (Sol), which is approximately 40 minutes longer than an Earth day. This altered day and night cycle can impact human sleep, health, and performance.
Requirements for volunteers
According to NASA, U.S. citizens or green card holders aged 30 to 55 who are fluent in English can apply. Additionally, applicants must not exceed a height of 1.88 meters. Candidates will undergo medical and psychological evaluations; dietary restrictions and sleep disorders may lead to disqualification.
Applicants are expected to have qualifications similar to those required for astronauts, including technical skills and a bachelor’s degree in engineering, natural sciences, or mathematics. Military experience is also advantageous. Volunteers will receive monetary compensation, although the amount is not disclosed in the announcement.
