On Monday, President Donald Trump stated that the US “will receive payment for protection” of the Strait of Hormuz, the main oil transportation route and the epicenter of escalating conflict with Iran.
In a telephone interview with Fox News, Trump noted that “we will keep the strait and probably manage it”. He added: “We will become the guardian of the strait — perhaps we will call it the guardian angel. And we should be reimbursed for this”.
Demand for reimbursement for protection
Trump also emphasized that the US “cannot be expected to do this for free, unlike many years when we guarded it for free”. He stated: “We guarded it for free, and now we will guard it, and we will receive payment for its protection. A lot of money”.
