According to the latest poll, Iceland is preparing for a referendum on resuming negotiations with the European Union, which will take place at the end of this month, where a very tight result is expected. A poll conducted by the research company Gallup on behalf of Áfram Ísland and published on Thursday showed that the camps of supporters and opponents of EU membership each have 46% support.
The subject of the plebiscite, scheduled for August 29, is the resumption of negotiations with the trade bloc – the European Union, which were suspended in 2015 after a change of government in Reykjavik. Another 8% of voters remain undecided.
Key issues and intense campaign
Among the key issues being discussed during the referendum are control over fish resources, the potential introduction of the euro, and security against the backdrop of changes in the security situation in Europe. The issue of joining the European Union has long been polarizing in Icelandic society, and each side is waging a relentless campaign ahead of the vote.
