President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that China has the capacity to persuade Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to negotiate, yet it is not doing so. In an interview with NHK, he noted that he has never seen Beijing apply pressure on Russia to end the war.
“Perhaps they raise the issue during some bilateral meetings – I don’t know. But I am convinced they wield huge influence over Russia, especially now that sanctions are in place, a shadow fleet operates, and energy and banking systems are cut off. China could certainly find a way to push Putin toward talks. I am sure of that. Yet they have not acted. If you have the ability but choose not to act, is that support or not?” Zelenskyy asked.
Zelenskyy on China’s position
Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes China is politically leaning more toward Russia than remaining neutral. He called Beijing’s lack of pressure a “disappointment” and said that strong leaders, including those in China, could, in his view, end the war quickly.
According to the Ukrainian president, the issue is not direct arms deliveries but China’s greater openness to Russia and its willingness to assist Moscow more than Kyiv. Zelenskyy stressed that for a country of such size, even a seemingly small difference can have a major impact.
Chinese technology in Russia
Zelenskyy also mentioned that he has seen North Korean‑made missiles in Ukraine, but none of Chinese origin. At the same time, he said Chinese technology is reaching Russia.
“The equipment they use comes from China, likely together with specialists and technology,” the president added.
