The International Federation of Football (FIFA) has allowed Russia to participate in an international football tournament for the first time in October, more than four years after the start of the war in Ukraine.

On Wednesday, FIFA announced it had sent invitations to all member associations to take part in the U-15 World Cup and the accompanying festival. These events will be held in Azerbaijan from October 22 to 31. The German news agency (dpa) confirmed that the list of invitees includes Russia and its ally Belarus.

History of Suspension and Other Sports

All Russian teams have been suspended from international competitions since the war in Ukraine began in March 2022.

Meanwhile, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has permitted Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete as neutral athletes in the Olympic Games in Paris 2024 and the Winter Olympic Games 2026, which will take place in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Signs of Return and Rankings

In recent months, there have been indications of a potential return for Russia to international football competitions. Since the ban was implemented, the men’s and women’s national teams of Russia have played matches outside of major tournaments.

The Russian men’s team currently ranks 34th in the FIFA world rankings, while the women’s team is in 27th place.
