The industrial sector of Germany lost 177,000 jobs over the past year, the Federal Employment Agency of Germany in Nuremberg reported on Wednesday.
As of December 2025, the agency noted that the industry employed 6.5 million people, accounting for approximately one-fifth of the entire workforce in Germany.
Greatest losses in the automotive industry
Overall, employment across all sectors of the economy decreased by 108,000 people. The agency indicated that growth in other sectors was insufficient to offset the losses in industry.
The largest job cuts occurred in the automotive industry and its supply chains, which saw 52,000 positions eliminated. The metallurgical industry cut 24,000 jobs, while mechanical engineering reduced its workforce by another 28,000.
According to the agency’s director, Andrea Nahles, the German industry is losing about 15,000 jobs each month, suggesting that reductions are likely to continue in the near future.
