The German government will blame Russia’s intelligence service for a failed drone attack last month on an airport used to deliver military equipment to Ukraine.
Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt will accuse Russia of the attack on Leipzig-Halle Airport during a joint press conference in Berlin on Tuesday, according to people familiar with the situation who asked not to be named as the information has not yet been made public.
Statements by German officials and consequences of the attack
Chancellor Friedrich Merz said last week that the attempted attack on a major logistics hub used for deliveries to Ukraine represented a new level of hybrid threat, without specifying who was behind it.
Merz stated that the perpetrators «will pay a price» for the attack, which forced the airport to divert several flights after a drone with explosives was detected near a Ukrainian cargo plane.
Heightened alert and rise in provocations
This drone incident, along with an investigation into a possible link between foreign intelligence agents and a weapons cache discovered on the outskirts of Berlin last year, has put Europe’s largest economy on heightened alert.
Europe has seen a rise in likely provocations by the Kremlin involving drones and explosions, more than four years after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began. The Russian government has denied allegations that Moscow is behind this wave of likely incidents.
