Greece intends to ban the use of e-scooters for individuals under the age of 17. Deputy Transport Minister Georgios Kotsiras announced new rules for the use of motorized scooters, specifically stating that the use of e-scooters by minors will be prohibited in the future.
A vote on the relevant bill is scheduled for Tuesday, as Georgios Kotsiras informed Skai TV. The reason for tightening the rules is the large number of accidents involving e-scooters with children and adolescents. According to the deputy minister, statistics show a high level of accidents among people under the age of 17.
Details of the bill and safety measures
The bill provides not only age restrictions but also the introduction of increased fines for dangerous driving and mandatory accident insurance. According to the Association of Greek Hospital Workers, about 400 children and adolescents were injured last year in accidents involving e-scooters, including fatalities.
If the law is passed, Greece will have some of the strictest rules for the use of e-scooters in the world. For example, in Germany, teenagers are allowed to use e-scooters from the age of 14, and similar age restrictions apply in other European countries.
