Iran congratulated Spain on its victory in the World Cup final, stating that this success will bring joy to people around the world who oppose the policies of the United States and Israel. On social media, Iranian officials also linked the victory of the Spanish team to the position of the Madrid government regarding the war in Gaza and recent events surrounding Iran.
The Spanish government previously condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, calling them a genocidal war, and also criticized the military actions of the US and Israel against Iran. Meanwhile, Israeli politicians and football fans supported the Argentine team, whose president Javier Milei is a supporter of Israel’s policies.
Position of Iranian officials
One of Iran’s leading negotiators, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, stated on Monday that the defense of the Palestinian people and Spain’s support for Iran demonstrated the freedom and perseverance of this respected nation. His words were quoted by the state news agency IRNA.
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf noted that Spain’s 1:0 victory brought joy not only to the Spanish but also to many free, independent, and fair-minded people around the world. The spokesman for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esmaeil Baghaei, also highly appreciated the position of the Spanish team and the country’s stance against aggression, genocide, and oppression in recent months.
