The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran reported on Monday that it had summoned the ambassador of France in Tehran to protest the actions of two French diplomats who were briefly detained in the country earlier this month.
Spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Esmaeil Bakaei stated during a weekly briefing that the French ambassador was summoned the day before. He emphasized that the government of France must cease such actions and “such interference in Iran’s internal affairs under deceptive labels.”
Iran accuses diplomats of interference
Esmaeil Bakaei claimed that the French diplomats “interfered in Iran’s internal affairs under the pretext of interacting with civil society.” He also noted that their actions “in no way correspond to the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961.”
On July 20, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot reported that the day before, two French diplomats in Iran were targeted by Iranian officials. He described the incident as “an extremely serious act of intimidation” by the security services of the Islamic Republic.
According to Barrot, both diplomats were “detained for several hours without any grounds, interrogated, and one of them was subjected to physical violence,” after which they were able to return to the embassy.
