IRGC reports attack on two tankers in the Strait of Hormuz under US air escort

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran (IRGC) stated on Friday that it had struck two tankers attempting to pass through the strategic Strait of Hormuz under the escort of US armed forces.

According to the IRGC, two oil tankers that did not comply with established requirements were hit and stopped. Meanwhile, four other oil tankers reportedly changed course and returned to their previous positions.

The IRGC claims that the vessels attempted to navigate through the strait via an undeclared route—an alternative path supported by the US, rather than the route designated by Tehran, which is closer to the Iranian coastline.

Control over the Strait of Hormuz and previous incidents

Iran has asserted enhanced control over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz since the start of hostilities on February 28. Tehran requires vessels to obtain permission and pay transit fees before passing through the waterway.

On Thursday, the IRGC reported that two oil tankers attempting to pass through the strait changed course and returned after a fire broke out on one of them.
