Current British Prime Minister Keir Starmer bid farewell to parliamentary deputies and pledged to support his successor Andy Burnham. On July 15, Starmer declared his “full support” for Burnham as he prepares to hand over power to the next prime minister.
During his final weekly questioning of deputies in parliament, Starmer expressed his hope for the next leader of his center-left Labour Party to thrive. When asked what advice he had for his successor, Starmer replied: “I will give my full support to my successor. I want this Labour government to be successful. I want our country to be successful. I will provide my support privately if asked, not publicly if not asked.”
Resignation and Political Path
Starmer announced his resignation in June, succumbing to months of pressure following a series of scandals, miscalculations, and sharp policy shifts. These events overshadowed his two-year term after he led his party to victory in the 2024 elections, ending 14 years in opposition.
Future Leadership of Andy Burnham
Burnham is expected to be elected leader of the Labour Party on July 17, having secured overwhelming support from 403 party deputies and backing from major trade unions. A significant majority within the Labour Party in the 650-seat House of Commons means he will automatically become the next prime minister.
