Lithuania may take on the role of mediator in the dispute between Poland and Ukraine. Efforts will likely need to be made again to facilitate a conversation between the presidents of Poland and Lithuania. The situation has escalated on both sides, said Skaystgirite in an interview with Žiniu radijas radio station on Tuesday (June 23).
Karol Nawrocki reported last week that in response to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky agreeing to name one of the military units «Heroes of UPA», he decided to revoke the Order of the White Eagle from the Ukrainian leader. Subsequently, some Ukrainian politicians, including former presidents Leonid Kuchma, Viktor Yushchenko, and Petro Poroshenko, rejected Polish orders.
Absence of Zelensky at the Conference
This week, a conference dedicated to the reconstruction of Ukraine will be held in Gdansk. Volodymyr Zelensky will not participate in the event. Instead, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko will attend, as she announced on social media.
According to Skaystgirite, who spoke before the final confirmation of the Ukrainian President’s decision, his absence «would cast a shadow on the atmosphere» of the conference. However, she emphasized that key decisions on supporting Ukraine are still to be made in Gdansk.
Importance of Strong Ties Between Kyiv and Warsaw
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda emphasized a week ago during a speech in the Lithuanian parliament that «for Lithuania, as well as for the entire region, it is important that the connection between Warsaw and Kyiv be as strong as possible». The head of state noted that Lithuania is committed to preventing any signs of weakening this connection.
