Lula maintains lead over Bolsonaro ahead of Brazil elections — poll

Brazilian President Luís Inácio Lula da Silva has a slight lead over Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, his main right-wing opponent, in a potential second round ahead of the October elections. This is according to a BTG Pactual/Nexus poll, the results of which were published on Monday, August 17.

In a simulated second round, Lula would receive 47% of voter support, while Bolsonaro would get 44%. These figures have not changed compared to last week’s poll. The poll’s margin of error is two percentage points.

Support for candidates in the first round

In a first-round scenario, Lula would lead with 41% of the votes, while Bolsonaro would come in second with 36%. Support for both candidates increased by one percentage point compared to the previous week.

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro is the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the valid votes in the first round, the top two candidates will proceed to the second round.

The poll surveyed 2,003 individuals and was conducted from August 14 to 16.
