Director Lilly Wachowski is facing difficulties in trying to realize her latest project. She cannot find financing for the thriller The Hunted, which she wrote with her partner Mickey Ray Mahoney.
Wachowski talked about this in the industry podcast The Business on California radio station KCRW. People like the film, but they really don’t want to make it because the entire cast consists of transgender people, Wachowski said. According to her, unfortunately, it is not the best time to do such things in the film industry, and there are fewer opportunities to tell stories with underrepresented voices and marginalized perspectives.
Ironical title of the coming-out statement
Lilly Wachowski publicly announced that she is a transgender woman in March 2016 — a few years after her sister Lana. After the success of their joint cult film The Matrix in 1999, they were known as the Wachowski Brothers.
Lilly Wachowski ironically titled her statement SEX CHANGE SHOCKER—WACHOWSKI BROTHERS NOW SISTERS!!! after, according to her, a reporter from the Daily Mail appeared at her house, trying to persuade her to give an interview and agree to a photo shoot. Mickey Ray Mahoney, with whom Lilly Wachowski wrote the script for The Hunted, is a transgender man.
Script as a way to vent anger
For Lilly Wachowski, it was extremely important to write this script as a reaction to what is happening to transgender people around the world. She called the script an incredibly liberating way in which she could vent all her anger, rage, and frustration.
Lilly Wachowski now plans to approach the matter creatively and find other ways to tell this story, not just through a film with a planned budget of 10 million US dollars. At the beginning of the month, she already held a public reading of the script in one of the theaters in Los Angeles.
Together, Lilly and Lana Wachowski also directed the Matrix trilogy, the films Speed Racer (2008) and Jupiter Ascending (2015). Together with German director Tom Tykwer, they worked on the screen adaptation of the novel Cloud Atlas. For Netflix, they created the science fiction series Sense8 (2015–2018). Recently, there have been fewer reports of the sisters working together: Lana Wachowski directed the fourth film in the series The Matrix Resurrections in 2021, and Lilly Wachowski worked as an executive producer on several film projects.
