Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that the country will continue to maximize vigilance ahead of the possible mass arrival of migrants to the autonomous city of Ceuta this Saturday, August 15.
She also emphasized that the “overwhelming majority” of European countries support the decisive measures taken by her government, including the suspension of the Schengen Agreement with Spain.
“Today, the overwhelming majority of European countries support the position that Italy has expressed in recent days”, Meloni said in an interview published on Friday by the economic publication Milano Finanza.
Europe’s position on migration
According to the Italian Prime Minister, Europe’s priority is to protect external borders from uncontrolled migration, eliminate any risks to security and terrorism, and protect the freedom of movement, which is the foundation of the Schengen system.
Security measures and further actions
Meloni emphasized that the “possible new wave” on August 15 forces the Italian authorities to remain “extremely vigilant and continue to take all necessary measures”. She promised that her government “will continue to work on consolidating the results achieved so far”.
