Meta believes its more affordable artificial intelligence (AI) could be the key to competing with OpenAI and Anthropic models. While the AI race has primarily focused on developing the most powerful models, the company now aims to emphasize the lowest price.
Meta is taking on competitors with the launch of Muse Spark 1.1 — its first paid AI API for developers. According to Bloomberg, the company will charge around 25% of the cost of similar APIs from leading AI providers, making Muse Spark a significantly cheaper alternative to OpenAI and Anthropic models.
New pricing strategy and revenue sources
Until now, Meta has built its ecosystem primarily on models with open weights and free access for developers. Muse Spark 1.1 introduces a new monetization model: developers can use the model for free up to a certain token limit, after which they will pay for additional usage through the new Meta Model API. This marks the first time Meta has offered paid access to one of its flagship AI models.
This strategy comes as Meta seeks to justify its substantial investments in AI. The company has allocated hundreds of billions of dollars to new data processing centers, chips, and recruiting specialists, while investors expect these investments to start yielding profits. By keeping consumer AI services free, Meta aims to generate revenue through access to the API as a new income source.
Capabilities and performance of Muse Spark 1.1
A low price will be ineffective without competitive performance, so Meta is banking on Muse Spark 1.1 to deliver both advantages. The company claims the model has made significant advancements in coding, tool use, multimodal reasoning, and agent AI capabilities — systems that can perform complex multi-step tasks with minimal user intervention.
Muse Spark 1.1 can process text, images, video, audio, and PDF files, features a context window of up to one million tokens, and is designed to support a range of applications from coding assistants to corporate AI agents. Meta asserts that Muse Spark 1.1 is competitive with current AI models across several benchmarks, including coding and reasoning tasks.
This same model, as the company previously reported during the presentation of Muse Spark, will power Meta AI in Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, the company’s separate app, and Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. The main question is whether the low price will be sufficient to disrupt a market where OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google have already established strong ecosystems for developers. Meta hopes that by combining competitive performance with lower costs, it can turn its massive AI investments into a profitable business.
