The death toll from sudden floods in Nepal has risen to 903 as of Monday, August 31, 2026. Bodies continue to be recovered, while 4,247 people remain missing, authorities said.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) reported that 272 bodies have been found in Chitwan district, 207 in East Nawalparasi, 151 in West Nawalparasi, and 62 in Gorkha district. Another 95 bodies were discovered in Nuwakot, 55 in Dhading, 37 in Tanahu, and 24 in Rasuwa.
Missing and trapped workers
According to the authority, among the 4,247 missing are 99 security personnel and 591 foreigners. At least 933 workers are believed to remain trapped at approximately six hydropower facilities in Nepal following last week’s floods.
Prime Minister Balendra Shah said the country is facing an «unthinkable and heart-wrenching» disaster, as authorities attempt to assess the full scale of the devastating floods that have claimed hundreds of lives.
A massive flow of ice, rocks, and debris struck villages and towns on Wednesday, August 19. The disaster has killed at least 797 people in Nepal and Tibet, located across the border in China.
