New wild cat species discovered in Bolivia for the first time in over a century

Researchers in Bolivia have identified a wild cat species previously unknown to science. This marks the first time in over a century that a new modern feline species has been officially named and described.

The animal, known to local communities as Tilcayo, has been classified as part of the South American tiger cat group. It was discovered in the dense cloud forests of Yungas, a mountainous region in Bolivia where forests are frequently shrouded in mist and characterized by high humidity.

The Tilcayo measures about 46 cm (18 inches) in length and weighs approximately 1.4 kg (three pounds), making it smaller than the average house cat.

Researchers used genetic data to confirm that the Tilcayo is a distinct species. It has been given the scientific name Leopardus tilcayo, incorporating the animal’s local name.
