‘Strong measures’ to ease protests in the country have been promised by France’s Macron. Because the state finances are under serious pressure and his presidential mandate is due to expire in April, the options Macron has to resolve this crisis are limited.
While in Marseille to inspect the damage from earlier protests, Macron told reporters, “I have … asked the government to respond to the legitimate demands that lie at the root of this social movement.”
A news conference is set to be held by his prime minister, Sebastien Lecornu, following a meeting with unions of high school students. More resources for the educational sector and a reform of the university admission process, which students say reinforces inequality, are being demanded by the pupils.
