President of Shih Hsin University, Chen Ching-ho, is taking a two-month unpaid leave after telling graduates to “end their lives” if their work life becomes too overwhelming.

These controversial remarks were made on May 30 during a master’s and doctoral graduation ceremony. Chen was sharing his experience in self-management and career development, urging graduates to manage their time and emotions after entering the job market. He noted that those who cannot do so should “end their lives quickly”, as “this world no longer needs your existence”. Some interpreted Chen’s comments as a reference to suicide.

Reaction of the President and the University

Chen Ching-ho published a statement on social media on Friday, apologizing for his “inappropriate speech”. He explained that his comments were intended to encourage graduates to improve their life and work skills, but were expressed unclearly. Chen also stated that he was not careful enough in his remarks due to a tight schedule, and requested a two-month unpaid leave, which will take effect on June 8. He promised to reflect on the incident and be more careful in his future statements.

On the same day, Friday, the university, located in Taipei, issued a separate statement, apologizing for the incident. The university announced that during Chen’s absence, Vice President Lin Heng-chih will assume his duties.
