In 42 states across the US, there have been 142 protests against artificial intelligence data processing centers, reflecting a growing public opposition to these facilities. Organizers described the “uncontrolled” construction as “an unacceptable infringement on our freedom”, according to Reuters. More than 70% of Americans currently oppose data centers, prompting bipartisan efforts to block these projects.
This resistance extends beyond a few individuals or cities. A coordinated protest was held this weekend at 142 different locations in 42 states, marking the first simultaneous action of its kind across the US. Forbes reports that public consent for the construction of data centers is becoming scarcer than the chips and other equipment required for their operation.
Growing resistance and political consequences
Data centers have encountered various shortages in recent years, including graphics processing unit (GPU) supplies and memory chip bottlenecks. Additionally, there is a limited supply of grid electricity and related energy infrastructure. However, many developers have failed to account for the lack of public support.
This resistance is not limited to protests; bipartisan political actions have resulted in delays for various projects and state-level bans. Currently, more than 69 jurisdictions have enacted bans on data centers, with Seattle (home to AI tech giants Microsoft and Amazon) and the state of New York implementing annual moratoriums. Consequently, over 130 billion dollars worth of data center projects have been delayed in just the first quarter of 2026.
Developer tactics and public demands
Developers have employed various strategies to circumvent these bans and resistance. This includes selecting sites in rural areas with fewer residents (and thus less opposition), providing their own electricity, or claiming that their data centers use less water than lawn care and gardening.
However, despite promises of jobs, investments, and tax revenues, the American public has grown wary of the consequences of living near a data center. This concern has intensified following reports of rising utility rates, water quality issues, and noise pollution across the country.
As a result, any data center project must take community interests into account. Developers can no longer rely solely on the approval of a friendly city council, especially since voters have demonstrated their willingness to remove officials who they believe do not represent their interests. While many recognize that the US needs data centers to compete in the AI sector, they do not want this to come at the expense of their quality of life. Although investors may continue to invest in acquiring chips and upgrading infrastructure, they cannot simply “buy” a community; instead, they need a robust plan that can withstand scrutiny and opposition, accounting for the months or even years required to obtain permits.
