Russia has announced a unilateral ceasefire for May 8-9, while warning Ukraine of possible retaliation should the May 9 parade, which commemorates the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, be targeted.
President Vladimir Putin ordered this ceasefire, which is set to coincide with Russia’s traditional parade. The Russian Ministry of Defense stated in a Telegram post that it expects Ukraine to respect the temporary cessation of hostilities.
The Ministry of Defense threatened to attack the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, should there be any attempt to disrupt the celebrations.
What Changes Are Planned for the May 9 Parade?
Last week, the Ministry of Defense announced that the main May 9 parade in Moscow would take place without heavy military equipment for the first time since 2007. The government explained this decision as a response to potential security threats.
During the celebrations, President Putin plans to deliver a speech. Among the guests at this year’s events, according to the Kremlin, will be Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
What is the Security Situation in the Region?
In recent months, Ukraine has intensified its strikes against Russia, regularly attacking targets deep within Russian territory.
On Monday, May 6, a drone struck a residential tower in an upscale Moscow district.
