Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez responded to remarks by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, stating that “solidarity and empathy may be a matter of choice, but respect for European agreements and data is not.” He made this statement on the social media platform X.
To support his comments, Sanchez referenced Frontex data regarding the number of illegal entries into the EU from 2021 to 2026.
Statistics as a response to criticism
According to Frontex, there were 478,600 illegal entries recorded through Italy. The figures also included 340,600 through the Western Balkans, 259,800 through Greece, 234,760 through Spain, and 48,000 through the eastern border.
Pedro Sanchez concluded that “now is not the time for division, but time to continue building a strong and united European Union.”
