Spanish Prime Minister: Mafia Spread Rumors Leading to Migrant Influx in Ceuta

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated on Friday that he believes the sudden influx of migrants to the North African enclave of Ceuta was driven by criminal networks spreading rumors about a recent court decision.

According to Pedro Sánchez, human trafficking networks took advantage of a favorable interpretation of the new immigration ruling. Earlier this month, the Spanish Supreme Court ruled that the immediate return of migrants who illegally cross the border does not apply to those arriving by sea.

Rumors Surrounding the Supreme Court Decision

Pedro Sánchez noted that after negotiations with Moroccan authorities, it was revealed that human trafficking networks “exploited a favorable interpretation of the Supreme Court’s decision.” He stated that this information “spread like wildfire in the last few hours,” which may have contributed to the sharp increase in the number of migrants.
