Spotify states that it will not recommend music from “AI personas” by default. Such music will not appear in editorial selections or personal recommendations.
“Listeners have clearly told us they don’t like seeing an artist profile that appears to be human, only to later find out that this persona is AI-generated,” Spotify notes. The platform is adjusting its algorithms to highlight authentic human artists and, based on available signals, to exclude spam, low-quality, and low-value content from recommendations. This decision comes as AI-generated music continues to flood streaming platforms. The music streaming service Deezer recently reported that AI-generated tracks already account for half of the daily song uploads on the platform.
Labeling and identification of AI personas
Spotify notes that the new labels only concern the identity of the performer, not the method of creating their music. Currently, Spotify does not have a system for detecting AI-generated music, unlike Deezer. Meanwhile, the platform allows artists to report the use of AI and has launched the “Verified by Spotify” badge, which confirms that the profile belongs to a real person.
The platform will notify performers if the “Likely AI Persona” badge appears on their profile and will give them the opportunity to contest this decision. Spotify also plans to add a feature that will allow listeners to report performers whose identities may be AI-generated. Changes will begin to be implemented in mid-September. After that, users will see the “AI persona” badge in the artist’s profile throughout the app if their image “does not represent a real person.”
From now on, performers will be able to self-report that they are AI personas, however, Spotify will not rely solely on their self-identification. The platform will use human verification and AI tools to determine if “the profile, including its name and image, appears to be a photorealistic identity generated by AI.” If Spotify concludes that the artist’s identity may be AI-created, their profile will display the “Likely AI Persona” badge. Initially, the platform will check artists who meet “established audience thresholds” to first cover profiles listened to by the largest number of users.
