In an interview published today by the Financial Times, the Swedish leader stated that this decision by the government of Pedro Sanchez could lead to a migration crisis in Europe similar to the one that occurred in 2015 and threaten the free movement zone on the continent.
“We must be very, very careful not to act in a way that even approaches what happened in 2015,” warned Kristersson. He also reported that he has already expressed to Sanchez his discontent with this decision, which could regularize the administrative status of 1.2 million people.
Risks for the Schengen Zone and criticism from other leaders
According to Kristersson, Spain’s decision allows these migrants to move freely within the Schengen Zone, which, according to him, “particularly harms” countries like Sweden. He noted that “many people who come to Europe want to go north.” Kristersson emphasized that any actions that could threaten the stable situation would be a very bad idea.
Kristersson, who is seeking re-election in September, does not rule out that he may need the support of the far-right party “Swedish Democrats,” which has neo-Nazi roots.
The criticism from the Swedish Prime Minister came the day after the Prime Ministers of Italy and Denmark, Giorgia Meloni and Mette Frederiksen, issued a joint statement. In it, they linked “uncontrolled immigration” to crime and the overloading of public services. After the start of the crisis in Ceuta, some European partners are particularly critical of the Spanish government’s migration policy.
