President Donald Trump on Wednesday mistakenly identified a current US adversary as a former enemy, claiming during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that a US aircraft carrier had come under missile attack from Japan. The 80-year-old American president made this remark during an impromptu press conference while praising the effectiveness of American air defense systems after the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln was reportedly attacked.
Details of the statement
“We had 111 missiles fired by the Islamic Republic of Japan. They were fired at the aircraft carrier over about an hour. 111 missiles heading toward a very expensive ship, and every one of them was shot down — mostly with the Patriot, but with other means as well,” Trump said.
It is likely that the US president was referring to a missile attack by Iran that occurred earlier this year but mistakenly named Japan. This verbal slip garnered attention because Japan has not engaged in combat against the United States for nearly a century.
