U.S. President Donald Trump paid 5.6 million dollars to writer E. Jean Carroll following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision not to hear his appeal in a case where a jury found him civilly liable for sexual assault and defamation. This information was revealed in a court document released on Tuesday.
“Today we are pleased to announce that she has received the damages awarded to her by the jury,” said E. Jean Carroll’s lawyer Roberta Kaplan. The jury’s decision in this case was made in May 2023, when it awarded 5.6 million dollars in compensation.
The U.S. Supreme Court declined to consider Donald Trump’s appeal at the end of June, making the decision final. Last week, a federal judge ordered the payment of the awarded amount.
Two separate trials
In the case for which Carroll has already received 5.6 million dollars, the former journalist and reviewer, now 82 years old, alleged that Trump sexually assaulted her in the fitting room of a New York department store in 1996. After these allegations were published in a book in 2019, he referred to her as “crazy” and claimed she fabricated a “fake story”.
In a separate defamation case, a court in New York awarded E. Jean Carroll 83.3 million dollars. This decision has already been upheld by the appellate court. However, the execution of the judgment remains suspended pending consideration of the issue by the Supreme Court.
