President Donald Trump stated that the United States will deliver a powerful strike against Iran following an attack on a US base in Jordan, for which Washington holds Tehran responsible. In this context, hostilities in the Middle East have intensified again after a several-day pause.
“We will hit them hard”, Trump said in a telephone interview, according to Fox News, adding that “they will get hit hard.” Following his remarks, oil prices surged to their highest level of the trading session.
Resumption of hostilities
A several-day pause in strikes ended on Tuesday evening after US forces reported an attack on a base in Jordan, which Washington blames on Iran. The United States and Saudi Arabia also targeted militants supported by Tehran in Iraq.
Iranian state media reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) struck the base in Jordan in response to “aggressive actions by the United States“, without providing additional details. At the end of last week, the United States and Iran had suspended mutual strikes to allow for diplomatic efforts, which contributed to a noticeable drop in energy prices. Also on Tuesday, Trump stated that he preferred negotiations over new attacks.
