Tusk: Poland Was Not Targeted in Russian Attack, Though Missile Violated Airspace

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, and Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration Marcin Kierwiński visited the site where an object fell near the settlement of Tarnawa-Kolonia on Thursday morning. The object violated Poland’s airspace during a large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine.

Tusk stated that there is no reason to believe that Poland was the target of the attack. However, two objects did breach Polish airspace. One of these, confirmed by traces found at the crash site, undoubtedly violated it, while the second, detected only by a brief signal near the Polish border, caused no consequences.

The crater discovered near Tarnawa—approximately 10 meters in diameter and up to 5 meters deep—suggests a high likelihood of a missile explosion. The Prime Minister noted that a final conclusion about the missile type has not yet been reached, but military experts believe that most of the traces found, including debris, indicate a Russian Kh-101 missile.

Investigation into the State’s Response

Donald Tusk reported that he received information about the incident from Minister of Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz immediately after Polish fighters were scrambled. Kosiniak-Kamysz also informed President Karol Nawrocki, and Tusk assured that he is in constant contact with him regarding this matter.

The Prime Minister emphasized that all aspects of the incident from both the Russian and Ukrainian sides will be thoroughly examined, as well as “all elements of the state’s response, so that our reactions are more perfect every week, every month.” He added that the war continuously presents new challenges, requiring state services to quickly adapt to emerging threats. According to military reports, “everything worked as it should.”

Changes in the RCB Alert System

Donald Tusk also announced changes to the operations of the Government Security Center (RCB). In the morning, residents of the Lublin Voivodeship heard air raid sirens, but SMS notifications from the RCB were not received.

At a press conference in Tarnawa-Kolonia, journalists raised concerns about this situation. The Prime Minister responded that, in his view, “something is missing in the procedures.” He noted that after an all-clear signal, people should receive not only warnings about danger but also separate SMS notifications indicating its conclusion. According to Tusk, relevant changes are expected to be implemented in the near future.
