The United Nations on July 21 condemned the escalation of Israeli military strikes in Gaza, which have resulted in the deaths of at least 57 Palestinians, including six children, over the past week.
Despite the ongoing ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas, hostilities in the Gaza Strip persist. “Nine months after the ceasefire announcement in Gaza, there is still no safe place for Palestinians,” said Tamin Al-Hitan, spokesman for the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, to journalists in Geneva.
Increased strikes and casualties
According to Al-Hitan, “The Israeli military has intensified its strikes on Gaza in recent days, killing and injuring dozens of Palestinians.” He reported that between 13 and 20 July, at least 57 Palestinians, including six children and eight women, were killed in these strikes.
The Israeli army has announced a series of strikes in the Gaza Strip in recent days, targeting members of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, whom it claims were involved in the attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 or in holding hostages afterward.
Additionally, the Israeli military reported strikes on a weapons depot, an arms manufacturing facility, and a rocket launch position, stating that this infrastructure posed a threat to their forces.
