North Korea as Russia’s ally
North Korea is a key ally for Russia in the conflict against Ukraine. In 2024, the country has already dispatched approximately 12,000 military personnel to Russia, who participated in combat operations in the Kursk region during the Ukrainian offensive. Media reports suggest these troops were used as “cannon fodder”. Additionally, Russia receives artillery and missiles from North Korea.
Vulnerability of the Russian army and Ukraine’s goals
The Russian army currently appears vulnerable to Ukrainian attacks, which are primarily targeting Russia’s energy infrastructure and inflicting damage on the country’s economy.
The objective of these strikes is to increase pressure on the Kremlin and potentially compel Russian President Vladimir Putin to return to negotiations.
