Brazil’s Finance Minister Dário Durigan on Monday, May 27, referred to Argentine President Javier Milei as a “clown” and dismissed his claims about the state of the Brazilian economy.
“A clown, the president of Argentina, came to Brazil yesterday and talked about Brazil, even though the country’s risk indicator in Argentina is significantly higher, the national debt there is larger, and inflation is also higher. Therefore, the statements of those who predict apocalypse and talk about inevitable problems should not be taken seriously,” said the head of the economic department.
Durigan made these remarks during a telephone interview with Rádio Jornal in the state of Pernambuco, responding to questions about analysts’ forecasts of a possible recession in the Brazilian economy in 2027.
Milei’s criticism of Brazil’s economy and Lula
Last Saturday, during the party convention of the Liberal Party (PL), where Flávio Bolsonaro was officially nominated for the presidency of Brazil, Milei stated that “today Brazil is heading towards a debt crisis because Lula did not carry out the necessary fiscal adjustment that the situation required, and now it is getting worse to get a chance to win”.
He also added that “profligacy has to be paid for sooner or later, and we hope that the one who caused it will pay for it by losing the elections in October”.
Criticism of the Supreme Federal Court judge
Milei also criticized Judge Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), calling him “bald trash”. The criticism stemmed from Moraes’ decision, which prevented him from visiting former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), who is under arrest in connection with an attempted coup d’état.
