Progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Democratic primary, defeating party leadership favorite

Progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed won the Democratic Party primary for the Senate in the American state of Michigan on Wednesday, highlighting key internal divisions over the party’s direction.

Struggle for the party’s direction

El-Sayed narrowly defeated moderate Congresswoman Haley Stevens, who was supported by many high-ranking members of the party establishment, such as Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer. The primary became one of the most expensive intra-party campaigns and essentially turned into a struggle between the progressive and moderate wings of the Democrats over the party’s future course.

Now, El-Sayed will face Republican Mike Rogers in November to retain the Michigan Senate seat for the Democrats. The November elections will determine the composition of Congress for the remainder of Donald Trump‘s presidential term.

“We won,” El-Sayed wrote in a post on X. “I am proud to be your Democratic Party candidate for the U.S. Senate. Let’s win in November.”
