Moldova recalls ambassador from Russia after drone explosion and condemns violation of sovereignty

The Republic of Moldova has recalled its ambassador from Russia for consultations following a drone explosion in the south of the country. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the incident near the settlement of Krokmaz on social media.

The ministry emphasized that this incident is a violation of Moldova’s sovereignty and threatens the safety of its citizens. On Sunday, near Krokmaz, on the Moldovan-Ukrainian border, a likely Russian drone fell and exploded. There were no casualties or damages.

President of Moldova Maia Sandu condemned the violation of Moldovan airspace on the social network X and called for an end to Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Moscow’s position on Transnistria

Moscow, for its part, stated that it would consider any armed provocation by Ukraine and the Moldovan authorities against the self-proclaimed region of Transnistria as an attack on Russia. This was reported by the state news agency TASS, citing Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Mikhail Galuzin.

According to him, Moscow will use all available means to protect Russians living in the region. Transnistria is a narrow strip of territory in the east of the Republic of Moldova along the border with Ukraine.

Although internationally the region is recognized as part of Moldova, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, it declared independence. Since then, this territory has relied on financial support from Russia. Moldova itself seeks rapprochement with the EU.

Russia has been waging war against neighboring Ukraine since February 2022. Russian drones and missiles have repeatedly crossed Moldovan airspace and fallen in the border regions of the country, located between Ukraine and Romania.
