Ukraine struck Novorossiysk, Russia’s main naval center on the Black Sea. This strike demonstrates Kyiv’s ability to threaten Russian military infrastructure far beyond the front line and calls into question the assumption that moving ships from Crimea could ensure their safety. Novorossiysk has become Moscow’s last major naval base in the region after sustained Ukrainian attacks forced a significant part of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet to leave occupied Crimea.
President Volodymyr Zelensky called the attack a “unique operation” and confirmed that the designated targets were hit. He did not provide many details, noting that Ukraine used Palyanytsia reactive drones, Neptune missiles, and unmanned maritime systems to strike air defense positions, docks, and port infrastructure. “The occupying fleet and all the infrastructure that supports it will not be safe as long as Russian aggression continues,” Zelensky stated. He also posted a video that allegedly shows Russian air defense systems operating over Novorossiysk at night.
Significance of the strike and fleet redeployment
Novorossiysk and its naval base are located more than 300 km from the front line. Kyiv’s strike is significant as it shows that Moscow’s decision to move a significant part of its fleet east from Sevastopol did not put it beyond the reach of Ukrainian forces. By targeting the port, which has become Russia’s main naval center on the Black Sea after its fleet was withdrawn from Crimea, Kyiv aims to demonstrate that Russia has no safe place to base its fleet in the Black Sea.
The Russian authorities have not released full data on military damage, although local reports described explosions and air defense activity in the Novorossiysk area.
Novorossiysk has become increasingly important to Russia after Ukraine forced a significant part of the Black Sea Fleet to leave Crimea, occupied by Moscow. For many years, Sevastopol was the fleet’s main base. However, Ukrainian missile and maritime drone operations have made the Crimean port increasingly dangerous, damaging military ships and infrastructure and limiting Russia’s ability to operate in the western part of the Black Sea. Since 2023, Russian military ships have begun moving east to Novorossiysk and other mainland ports.
The redeployment aimed to move the fleet beyond the reach of Ukrainian weapons. Kyiv now seeks to demonstrate that distance alone provides only limited protection. Novorossiysk is important not only as a naval base but also as a major commercial and energy port, handling significant volumes of cargo, Russian crude oil, and petroleum products alongside military activities. Thus, the constant threat to the city can have consequences that go beyond purely military targets, disrupting logistics and maritime trade, affecting oil supplies, and undermining the perception of security in Russia’s rear areas.
