Security for Prince Harry and his family in the UK could cost taxpayers up to £5 million a year. The debate over possible state funding flared after the unexpected announcement that Harry and his family will return from the US, six years after their split from the Windsor dynasty.
According to experts cited by British media, the cost could reach £5 million annually. One former minister, anonymously quoted by the Mail tabloid and historically critical of Harry and Meghan, described the situation as a manifestation of “an indecent circus” that “the taxpayer, already burdened, will have to watch.”
The discussion in the country suggests the possibility of state funding for the security of the Dukes of Sussex, although the government has not announced any decision yet. The day before, Labour leader Andy Burnham limited himself to a statement, calling the issue of their security a “private matter” for Harry and Meghan after their return to the UK at the end of the month.
Review of security measures
The prince is still awaiting the results of a review of security measures after his automatic right to state protection was revoked. This followed the split from the Windsors and Harry and his wife’s decision to step back from active royal duties. Currently, the government committee RAVEC, responsible for the matter, is examining the situation in light of the Sussexes’ permanent residence in the UK.
Dai Davies, former head of the Scotland Yard unit that protects members of the royal family, said Harry’s return “changed the situation.” He added that returning with his family, living in the UK, and the prince’s public profile increase the likelihood that he will be able to obtain police protection.
Meghan may return to acting
Meanwhile, British media reported that Meghan may return to acting in an as‑yet‑unannounced project. This could be her first role since she stopped filming before her wedding to Harry in 2018, when she played lawyer Rachel Zane in the series “Suits”.
