23-year-old defender Romano Floriani Mussolini made his first appearance for the first team of Rome’s Lazio in an official Serie A match. The game took place at a stadium that was opened almost a century ago in the presence of his great-grandfather Benito Mussolini. This was reported on the official website of Serie A.
The footballer came on the field in the 19th minute of the away match of the first round of Serie A against Bologna, replacing Adam Marusic. His team won with a score of 1:0. Just three minutes after coming on the field, Floriani Mussolini committed a foul and received a yellow card.
Interestingly, the teams met at the Renato Dall’Ara stadium in Bologna. It was at this arena on October 31, 1926 that the footballer’s great-grandfather Benito Mussolini was present at the opening ceremony, arriving at the stadium on horseback. Later, this event was immortalized in the architectural ensemble of the sports complex with a sculpture of a horseman. It was demolished in 1943 during the liberation of the city.
Floriani Mussolini, the great-grandson of the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini on his mother’s side, was born in Rome and is a graduate of the football academies of Roma and Lazio. Previously, he had not played for the first team of Lazio, and in previous seasons he played on loan for the clubs Pescara, Juve Stabia, and Cremonese. His jersey only shows the name Romano, without the surname Mussolini.
