STOCKHOLM, Aug 28 — The armed forces of Sweden will take part in monitoring and protecting Finland‘s territory with Gripen fighter jets and corvettes at least until the end of 2026. This was reported on Friday by the Defense Forces of Finland.
The Swedish military equipment, in particular, will boost air surveillance, allowing the Defense Forces of Finland to free up some of their own resources to respond to violations and incidents “if such a need arises,” the Finnish military said.
Sweden strengthens Finland’s defense
The initiative is a response to a request from Finland to Sweden. Finland’s eastern border with Russia stretches for 1,340 kilometers (833 miles).
Finland and Sweden, the two newest members of NATO, already have close bilateral defense cooperation.
