Argentine President Javier Milei today announced he will deliver a national address, to be broadcast simultaneously on all television channels, “to give the public more details on the diplomatic progress the government has made in defending the sovereignty of the Malvinas Islands”. The president’s decision to address citizens directly follows remarks made yesterday by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Donald Trump’s Remarks and Argentina’s Position
Trump made the comments in response to a question from BBC about a possible review of Washington’s long‑standing neutral position in the dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom over sovereignty of the Falkland (Malvinas) Islands. The U.S. president said it was “one of many positions that I could review”.
The government of Javier Milei appears to be seeking to capitalize on the current political and diplomatic tension between Washington and London. In a radio interview today, the Argentine president said that Donald Trump’s words regarding the Falkland (Malvinas) Islands were “something very powerful concerning the most important and sacred cause for Argentines”.
According to the presidential administration, Milei’s address is scheduled for late Thursday evening.
