Russian ruler Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump on September 8, against the backdrop of visits by US special envoys to Kyiv and Moscow. This was reported by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti, citing Putin‘s aide Yury Ushakov.
According to Russian officials, Donald Trump wants a breakthrough in ending the war between the Russian Federation and Ukraine during his presidency. They also note that Trump stressed that ending the war in Ukraine “would open up prospects for a large‑scale restoration of relations between Russia and the US.”
In turn, Russian officials reported that Putin assured the American president that Russia has no intention of carrying out hostile plans against Europe.

The Russian Federation said that Putin and Trump gave a positive assessment of the results of the US special envoys’ trips to Russia and Ukraine. The presidents also agreed to stay in touch and call each other if necessary.
Donald Trump‘s term will officially end in January 2025, and the next US presidential election is scheduled for 2024.
Earlier, on September 6, the US president’s special envoys met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv. Following the meeting, Zelenskyy agreed with the US president’s special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on a new visit to Ukraine.
A day earlier, on September 5, the US special envoys held talks in Moscow. Yury Ushakov, an aide to the ruler of the Russian Federation, said that Putin expressed confidence in achieving the war’s objectives. Meanwhile, the White House called the talks “substantive” and announced that further steps would be announced in the coming weeks.
