Egypt has unloaded a vessel that, according to Kyiv, was carrying 26,900 tons of stolen Ukrainian wheat, drawing sharp criticism from Ukraine. The ship, named Asomatos, delivered grain reportedly taken from Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories to Abu Qir port, despite prior warnings.
Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized Cairo on Tuesday, stating on social media platform X that, “despite repeated warnings,” the Asomatos was permitted to unload its illegal cargo. Four days prior, Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office had officially appealed to Egypt’s Ministry of Justice for legal assistance concerning this shipment. The grain was reportedly exported by the sanctioned company Agro-Frigat via Russian-occupied Crimea.
Kyiv’s Reaction and Call for International Law
The Ukrainian side, Sybiha said, had provided all necessary data and legal grounds for the arrest of the vessel and its cargo. The Deputy Minister emphasized that Ukraine had been a reliable guarantor of food security for Egypt for many years. “We do not understand why our Egyptian partners are repaying them by continuing to accept stolen Ukrainian grain,” he noted.
Sybiha called on Egypt to adhere to international law, its promises made to Ukraine, and the principles of bilateral relations.
