The lower house of Spain’s parliament called on Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to resign during a non-binding vote.
The proposal received 177 votes in favor, 171 against, and one abstention in the house, which has 350 seats. A separate clause in the resolution urged Sanchez to seek a vote of confidence if he does not call for early elections.
Government reaction and prime minister’s position
Justice Minister Felix Bolanos dismissed the vote as purely symbolic, stating that it has “zero political effect.” Only Sanchez can decide whether to ask parliament for a vote of confidence.
On Wednesday, Sanchez reiterated to parliament that he plans to remain prime minister, denying any corruption allegations. The opposition could present a no-confidence motion but has so far refrained from doing so, as it lacks the necessary votes for approval.
